The University is proud to announce its annual celebration of Black History Month as part of Listen!, the University’s commitment to equality and diversity.

This year’s activities will focus on the theme of Racism(s): Discrimination, Displacement and Home and will offer staff, students and local communities the opportunity to participate through dialogue and debate.

Black History Month at the University will launch with an event on Wednesday, 5 October, between 12noon and 2pm, in the International Life Centre, University House. Representatives from the various staff networks will make short presentations on the months theme and music students will perform. Refreshments will be provided.

Other highlights include Who do you think you are?, an exciting and hands-on workshop led by Malaysian-born Sri Lankan playwright and actress Rani Moorthy. Part creative writing, part drama and part genealogy, each participant will be encouraged to journey into their family history to find the unexpected and the surprising.

Who do you think you are? takes place on Wednesday, 12 October, between 5.30pm and 7pm, at Salford Museum & Art Gallery, Peel Park.

On Wednesday, 19 October, colleagues will have the opportunity to explore the month’s themes in more depth through discussion, presentation and debate. Racism(s): A Symposium on discrimination, displacement & home, takes place at Think Lab, Maxwell Building, between 12.30pm and 5.30pm.
Dr Robert Beckford – educator, author and award-winning broadcaster in the field of religion, culture and politics – will host a closing lecture and film screening in Lady Hale Lecture Theatre, Lady Hale Building, at 7pm on Wednesday, 26 October.

In his film, Empire Pays Back, Dr Beckford believes that Britain should pay reparations to the descendents of slaves and hires a team of experts to put a monetary figure on the amount owing.
